Lilly Tempo connected-insulin platform
Eli Lilly and Company
Lilly's connected Tempo Pen, Smart Button, TempoSmart app, and clinician portal have entered shutdown. New data collection and calculations ended on 27 July 2026; the app and portal are read-only through 31 December, after which stored platform data will no longer be accessible. Ordinary Lilly KwikPens are not affected.
The scorecard
The Smart Button detected, stored, and transferred Tempo Pen dose data, but new data collection ended on 27 July 2026.[1]
TempoSmart previously combined dose history with calculations and diabetes data; calculation functions are now disabled during the read-only period.[1]
The platform could ingest connected CGM data, but no new data are collected after 27 July 2026 and the service ends entirely at year-end.[1]
Used standard disposable Tempo insulin pens; it did not create a new half-unit dosing option.
Existing pens can still inject insulin until expiry, but the digital system is read-only and users must export data and transition elsewhere before 31 December 2026.[1]
The Smart Button fit Tempo Pens and depended on TempoSmart/Tempo Insights; that platform is being retired rather than migrated to an open successor.[1]
No longer available for a new start: Smart Button prescriptions ended in 2025, Tempo Pen fills and app data collection ended 27 July 2026, and the remaining service shuts down 31 December 2026.[1]
These tools do not automate basal insulin. Scores reflect what the shipping product does for injection users: reliably capturing doses, turning glucose and insulin-on-board data into useful guidance, and reducing daily burden without hiding regional or insulin-cartridge lock-in.
The full picture
The Tempo platform is now a transition story, not an available smart-pen option. Lilly paired special Tempo disposable insulin pens with a reusable Tempo Smart Button, the TempoSmart patient app, and Tempo Insights for clinicians. The button transferred injection data; the app combined it with glucose and other diabetes information.1
That connected workflow stopped on 27 July 2026. From 28 July through 31 December, existing accounts can only view and export historical data: no new data collection, entry, or calculations. The app was removed from app stores on 27 July. After 31 December 2026, TempoSmart, Tempo Insights, support, and previously stored platform data are no longer available.1
The boundary matters. Unexpired Tempo Pens can still inject insulin without the connected platform, and ordinary Lilly KwikPens—Basaglar, Humalog, and Lyumjev—are not discontinued. What ended is the Tempo connected-product family and its data service.1
