VIP-1: extended-release verapamil in Stage 1 preclinical T1D

What this study tests

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2/3 trial in France testing whether 48 weeks of extended-release oral verapamil preserves beta-cell function in children and adults with Stage 1 (normoglycemic, multiple-autoantibody-positive) T1D.

Evidence at a glance

Who can enter the study?
Children and adults aged 7–45 years with Stage 1 T1D (presence of at least two islet autoantibodies without dysglycemia) and body weight at least 30 kg. Registered eligibility ↗Enrollment criteria describe who may enter. They do not establish who was analyzed or the denominator for a reported result.
Reported benefit and results
No results posted. Registry checked 19 October 2026 (ClinicalTrials.gov first posted 19 October 2026; EU CTIS 2025-524318-27-00 authorised 5 August 2026): not yet recruiting; estimated n=50; estimated primary completion March 2031.Read the result sources and their limitations →

Primary endpoints

  • Beta-cell function index (OGTT/MMTT C-peptide model) at 48 weeks

The full picture

What the study asks

VIP-1 is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2/3 trial sponsored by Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris evaluating whether 48 weeks of once-daily extended-release oral verapamil preserves beta-cell function in individuals with Stage 1 (preclinical, normoglycemic) type 1 diabetes.12

Who it involves

Children and adults aged 7–45 years with Stage 1 type 1 diabetes (at least two positive islet autoantibodies and normal glucose tolerance) weighing at least 30 kg. Cardiac conduction, hypotension, and other standard verapamil exclusions apply.1

Design and timing

The registry lists an estimated enrollment of 50 participants in France, with an estimated start date of January 2027 and estimated primary and study completion in March 2031. The primary endpoint evaluates a modeled beta-cell function index derived from oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) / mixed-meal tolerance test (MMTT) C-peptide measurements at 48 weeks.12

Evidence and limits

No results are posted, and the trial is not yet recruiting. Earlier verapamil trials (such as CLVer and Ver-A-T1D) studied newly diagnosed Stage 3 type 1 diabetes; whether verapamil alters progression in Stage 1 normoglycemic autoimmunity remains untested.1
